From Northleach (Gloucs), which is recorded as Lecce in 1086, Northletch in 1219, and Nortlegg' in 127. The place takes its name from the river Leach, named with Old English *læcc *lec(e) ‘stream, bog; stream flowing through boggy land’.

North- is from Middle English north ‘north, northern’, apparently added to the place-name to distinguish it from nearby Eastleach (Gloucs).
