(ii) from the placename Nie (聶) the name of a fief (located in Shandong province) granted to a son of the Duke Ding of Qi (ruler of the state of Qi reigned 1014–975 BC). Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 乜: (i) traced back to some minority ethnic groups (such as the Xianbei Hui or Tangut people).

(ii) adopted in place of another Chinese surname 也 (pronounced as Ye in Mandarin).

Chinese: variant Romanization of the surname 倪 see Ni.
