Irish (Sligo): habitational name from Angle in Pembrokeshire, Wales, which is recorded as Angulo in 1291, le Angle in 1272–1301, and le Nangle in 1325. The initial N- results from misdivision of the Middle English prepositional phrase atten Angle (compare Angle).
The surname, which was taken to Ireland by Normans from Pembrokeshire, has been Gaelicized as de Nógla. There has been considerable confusion with Nagle.
