The place-name may derive from Old English *myssen ‘growing with mysse’ (a derivative of the plant name *mysse, the exact sense of which is unknown) + denu ‘valley’.

Alternatively, the initial element may be a lost river-name *Mysse (genitive *Myssan), probably an early name for the river Misbourne.
