Welsh (Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire): from the Middle Welsh personal name Meilyr (Brythonic Maglorīx) from elements meaning ‘prince’ + ‘king’. The name of the Breton saint Maglorius is a Latinized form of this.

It was brought to Wexford from Wales in the 12th century and has been Gaelicized as Mac Maoilir.

Welsh (Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire): alternatively it may be a variant of Mailer.

Dutch: variant archaic or Americanized of Meijler itself perhaps a variant of Melaard a derivative of the Latin personal name Amelius.
