Mccalden Family History

Mccalden Surname Meaning

Origin uncertain possibly from Mac Haldan ‘son of Haldan’ see Haldane. MacLysaght gives a location in south Ulster with a variant Haldan and says that some bearers of the surname were of planter stock.

As a surname Haldane was found in Perths in the 14th century, a time when Scottish Gaelic was spoken there. MacLysaght notes the Irish form Mac Comhaltáin in the Annals of the Four Masters in Derry (MacLysaght p.52 under Colton).
