Irish (northern): Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Gafraidh ‘son of Gafradh’ a Gaelic form of the Old Norse personal name Guthfróthr composed of the elements guth ‘god’ + fróthr ‘wise’ and equivalent to English Godfrey. An alternative Gaelic form of the personal name is Gothraidh which gave rise to McGorry. In Ireland this is a branch of the Maguires of Fermanagh.
