Apparently from a personal name plus suffixed -son. The personal name Maccus possibly a variant of Magnus was well known in Gaelic Scotland although Black lists this surname as Mackieson 'pronounced Meekison'.

Black also lists a Gaelic surname McKessan from Mac Ceasàin (Black pp. 484 528 527).

McKessan however would have the stress on the second syllable.
