An unrecorded Middle English lole loll(e) might be a predecessor of early Modern English loll ‘that which lolls a tongue’ (1582 in OED) or ‘one who lolls; an idle person’ (1600 in OED). The word is a derivative of Middle English lollen ‘to hang loosely dangle; be idle’. Some early bearers of Loll(e) may alternatively belong at (2).

perhaps in some instances from an unrecorded Middle English personal name Lolle a variant development of Old English Lulla (see Lull) or even a late pet form of Lorence (see Lawrence). Compare Lolley.
