Lesnik Family History
Lesnik Surname Meaning
Polish (Leśnik) and Slovak (Lesník): occupational name for a forester. Polish leśnik Slovak lesník derived from Polish dialect and Slovak les ‘wood, forest’. The homonymous Sorbian cognate Lěsnik is apparently found in Germanized forms only (see Lessing).
Slovenian: topographic name for a forest dweller derived from dialect les ‘forest’. Slovenian (Lešnik): nickname or topographic name from lešnik ‘hazelnut’ or lešje ‘hazel trees’ or a habitational name for someone from a place called Lešje named with this word.
It is probably also a topographic name for a forest dweller (see above).
