Jessiman Family History

Possibly from Jesmond (Northumb), as suggested by Black and as partly supported by medieval spellings such as Jessementh for this place. The place takes its name from Yese, an old name for the river Ouseburn, + Old English mūð ‘river mouth estuary’, later replaced by Old French mont and mond ‘hill’.

Alternatively, the several rare variants with a front vowel in the final syllable, for example Jessamine, Jessimine, Jessimen, and Jessamin, along with the almost universal medial syllable as in these and Jessaman, suggest a nickname from Early Modern English gessemine.

Regional forms such as jessamy meaning ‘jasmine’ or a form close to these have likely influenced the naming convention.
