Jeckell Family History

Jeckell Surname Meaning

From the Old Breton personal name Iudicael, which became Iedecael, and modern Gicquel and Iezequel (Loth Bretonne), the name survives in French as Jézéquel. It is derived from iuð ‘lord’ with a suffix -ig + hael or hail ‘generous’.

The name is found at Bodmin (about 1000) as Gyðiccœl (Feilitzen Pre-Conquest Personal Names). In England, the personal name was particularly common in Yorks and Lincs and in districts where Bretons settled after the Conquest.
