English: variant of Iver with post-medieval excrescent -s, a habitational name from Iver (Buckinghamshire) named from Old English ȳfre ‘edge or brow of a hill, tip of a promontory’ or from a minor place called with the same word.

North German: patronymic from the personal name Ivar (see Iversen).
