Huthwaite Family History

From Huthwaite (now Hucknall under Huthwaite) in Notts, which is recorded as Hothweyt in 1280 and Houghtwayt in 1315. The place-name derives from Old English hōh ‘heel spur of land’ + Old Scandinavian þveit ‘clearing meadow paddock’.

From Huthwaite in Whorlton (NR Yorks), which is recorded as Hogthuet in the 12th century. The place-name probably has the same etymology as the Notts place-name in (1).

From Howthwaite in Caldbeck (Cumb), which is recorded as Hothweit in 1209. The place-name has the same etymology as the Notts place-name in (1).
