From Hurdley in Church Stoke (Montgomerys) Hordley (Shrops) which is recorded as Hordelei in 1086 or perhaps Hordley Farm in Wootton (Oxon) which is recorded as Hordlega in 119.

The Shrops and Oxon place-names derive from Old English hord ‘treasure’ + lēah ‘wood woodland clearing’.

The Montgomerys place-name may have the same origin but this cannot be certain without a greater number of early forms.
