Irish (Mayo and Roscommon): possibly a shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó hOistir ‘descendant of Oistir’, a personal name of unexplained etymology.

However, without any early bearers in Gaelic sources, it may simply be the English name in Ireland.
