from Henfield (Sussex) which is recorded as Hanefeld in a 14th century copy of a document from 770. The place-name probably derives from Old English hēan dative case of hēah ‘high’ + feld ‘open country’ though it is possible that the first element is henn ‘hen’ (genitive plural henna).

perhaps also from Henfield in Westerleigh (Gloucs) which is recorded as Hennefeld in 1189. The place-name derives from Old English henn ‘hen’ (genitive plural henna) + feld ‘open country’.
