Hemington Family History
Hemington Surname Meaning
From any of three places called Hemington (Leics, Northants, Somerset), all recorded as Hemmington in the 13th century. The place-names probably derive from the Old English personal name Hemma + Old English connective -ing- + tūn ‘farmstead estate’.
However, the Northants place-name is recorded as Hemmingethon in the 12th century and may derive from the personal name Hemma + the Old English group-name suffix -ingas (genitive -inga-) + tūn.
