from either of two places called Heighington (Durham Lincs). The Durham place-name is recorded as Heghyngtona in a 14th-century copy of a document from 1183 and probably derives from Old English *hēahing ‘high place’ (from hēah ‘high’ + the place-name forming suffix -ing) + tūn ‘farmstead estate’.

The Lincs place-name is recorded as Hictingtun' in a 13th-century copy of a document from 1154–89 and may derive from the Old English personal name Hyht + Old English connective -ing- + tūn.
