Hawkesford Family History
Hawkesford Surname Meaning
Perhaps from Hawksworth (Notts), which is recorded as Hokiswurth in 1203 and Hawksforth in 1535. The place-name probably derives from the Old English personal name Hōc (genitive Hōces) + Old English worð ‘enclosure’; the form of the name appears to have been altered under influence from Middle English hauk ‘hawk’. Some examples may belong under (2).
From a lost or as yet unidentified place of this name, probably in Warwicks or Staffs. It is clearly originally Hawkford with an excrescent medial -s- and may be from Halford (Warwicks), which is recorded as Halgford and Halchford in 1232.
This derivation comes from Old English halh ‘nook, corner of land’ + ford ‘shallow place by which water can be crossed, ford’.
