Hartlett Surname Meaning

Possibly a variant of Hartley as some of the evidence of early bearers cited below seems to suggest, but the development is irregular—the reverse of what one would expect. More naturally, the final -ett of (H)artlett would have weakened to -ey, giving Hartley.

If (H)artlett is original, its etymology is obscure. Any link with Arlott, as suggested by Jane Arlott 1760, and Jane Artlett 1760 in IGI (West Tarring, Sussex), seems to be accidental by confusion of the two names.
