The place-name is recorded as Habringham in 1242, Habringeham in 1296, and Habrincham in 1324 and may derive from an old hill name *Hēabeorg (Old English hēah ‘high’ + beorg ‘hill’).

The name also includes the Old English group-name suffix -ingas (genitive -inga-) and hām ‘village, homestead’ meaning ‘homestead of the dwellers at Heabeorg’.
