Gordge Family History

Gordge Surname Meaning

From Middle English gorge corge ‘throat’, the term has its roots in Old French gorge. It is likely that, in at least some instances, it represents a reduced form of Middle English gorgerer.

In Old French, gorg(i)ere was an occupational term referring to a maker of gorgers or gorgets, which were pieces of armor designed to protect the throat. This can be compared to Simon Gorget, noted in 1327 in the Subsidy Rolls of Cambridgeshire.

Additionally, the term may have also referred to someone who crafted cloths or wimples intended for covering the neck and bosom, as indicated by the Middle English term gorger.
