English (Wiltshire and Gloucestershire): possibly a nickname from Anglo-Norman French gengle, a variant of jangle ‘gossip, babbling, bickering’. In some cases also an Americanized form of South German Gingel: from the ancient Germanic personal name Gingo (see Ging).

The surname Gingel is rare in Germany where it is found mainly in Rhineland-Palatinate.
