Indian: Brahmin Kayastha and Rajput name from Sanskrit gaur ‘fair one’ an allusion to the learnedness and high status. It is a name borne by Saraswat Brahmins also by Kayasthas and Rajputs in the Gonda district of Madhya Pradesh.

In some cases possibly also an Americanized form of German Gauer.
