The place-names derive from Old English fox ‘fox’ + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’.

From Foxton in Sedgefield (Durham), which is recorded as Foxedene in about 1170, or Foxton in Alwinton (Northumb), recorded as Foxden in 132. The place-names derive from Old English fox ‘fox’ + denu ‘valley’.
