from Fowlis (Angus) or less commonly from Fowlis Wester in Strathearn (Perths). The place-names are recorded respectively in the names of Thor de Foules 1165–70 below and of Isachar capellanus de foglais c. 1208 in Inchaffray Charters.

Both are from Gaelic foghlais ‘small stream rivulet’ literally ‘sub-stream’ from fo- ‘under sub-’ + glais ‘stream burn’.
