Fatherley Family History
Fatherley Surname Meaning
Perhaps from Fotherley alias Fortherley in Bywell Saint Peter (Northumb) which is recorded as Falderleg' Fauderleg in 1255 and Fawdle in 1538. The place-name derives from Old English *faldere ‘sheep-folder one who folds animals’ + lēah ‘a wood woodland clearing’.
It is not certain however that there is a connection between the medieval and post-medieval bearers cited here.
