In Somerset, the name comes either from the Old English male name Ēadwine or from the feminine Ēadwynn + ing + tūn. Edington (Wiltshire) is from either the Old English personal name Ētha + dūn ‘hill’ or from Old English ēthe ‘uncultivated’ + dūn.
