Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic) Polish Czech and Slovak: from East and West Slavic dub ‘oak’ applied as a nickname for someone of great strength or as a topographic name for someone who lived by an oak tree.
The same Sorbian surname is found only in Germanized forms only (see Dube and Duwe).
