Cuddon Family History

Cuddon Surname Meaning

Probably from an unrecorded Middle English personal name Cod(d)ing or Cudding. These would have been pet forms (using the hypocoristic suffix -ing) of the Old English personal names Codda (see Codd) Code (see Coad) or Cudda (see Cudd).

The latter is a common pet form of names in Cūð- such as Cuthbert and Cobbold as are Cutt and Cutting (also occurring as Cutten and Cutton in Suffolk and Norfolk).

Later reduction of -ding to -den and -don will have given the surname the appearance of a locative name.
