Coyote Surname Meaning

Hispanic and Amerindian (Mexico and Guatemala): from a Castilianized form of Nahuatl (Aztec) coyotl ‘coyote’. Native American: translation into English (and shortening) of a personal name based on a word such as Cheyenne o'kohome meaning ‘coyote’ (see 1 above).

The cultural significance of the coyote to Native Americans is reflected in their traditional personal names, some of which were adopted as surnames (translated into English).

For example, one such name is Little Coyote (see Littlecoyote).
