English (of Norman origin): perhaps a variant of Connie a habitational name associated with Weston Coyney in Staffordshire whose manorial affix is taken from the family of John Koyne or Coyne (1242) and also with the adjacent village of Caverswall.

Coyne might otherwise derive from Coingt in Aisne, France, recorded as Cuin in 1160. English: possibly from Middle English coyn, coigne, Anglo-Norman French coign, coigne ‘wedge, die for stamping money’ a word which later came to mean ‘piece of money’ and may have been used as a metonymic occupational name to denote a moneyer.

English (of French Huguenot origin): altered form of French Coin. French: nickname from Middle French coine ‘bacon rind’ denoting someone with rough skin compared to the rind of the pig.
