Cossington Family History

From Cossington in Aylesford (Kent), which is recorded as Cusintone in 1210–12 and Cosinton in 1278, and from Cossington (Leics), which is recorded as Cosintone in 1086 and Cusinton in 1176.

Possibly also from Cossington (Somerset), which is recorded as Cosintone in 1086 and Cusinton in 1196, though no medieval bearers have been noted in the south-west.

The three place-names all mean ‘farmstead associated with a man called Cusa or Cosa’ from an Old English personal name Cusa or *Cosa.

This etymology includes the connective particle -ing- and tūn meaning ‘farmstead settlement’.
