The place-name is from Old English *clop(pe) ‘hill’ + cot(e) ‘cottage’.

The Wallingford place had a 'mansion' and its lands were well documented in the Middle Ages whilst the similarly named place in Grittleton (Wilts) was one of 'cottages'.
