Chuter Family History

Chuter Surname Meaning

of uncertain origin; perhaps an -er derivative of a word reflecting the pre-English forest name seen in Chute. If this is so, it would be a locative name for a person who lived at a place denoted by that word.

The place may be the one indicated in the name of Thomas Chote 1381 in Poll Tax (Godalming Surrey) if this is not a variant of Choat.

It could refer to Chute Forest on the border of Hants and Wilts.
