Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 倉 meaning ‘barn' in Chinese: (i) said to be traced back to Cang Jie (倉頡) who was said to be the inventor of the Chinese characters and an official historiographer during the reign of legendary Huang Di the ‘Yellow Emperor’ (c. 27th century BC).

(ii) said to be born by descendants of officials in charge of open-air granaries.
