English: perhaps a variant of Collan with an unrounded first vowel either a habitational name from Colan (Cornwall) or a patronymic from a Middle English personal name Collan (Irish Collán).

That gave rise to a surname in medieval Westmorland, Cumberland, and Lancashire.
