Bucknall Family History

From Bucknall (Staffs Lincs), the first element of which is Old English bucca ‘he-goat’ in the genitive case (buccan) or an Old English male personal name derived from it, plus Old English h(e)alh ‘nook corner of land’. From Bucknell (Shrops Oxon), the first element of which is identical to that in the previous example, combined with Old English hyll ‘hill’. In some instances (for example, in Oxon), it may be a variant of Bicknell.

Chiefly from Bucknole Farm (in Northleigh, Devon) and perhaps also from Bucknowle (in Church Knowle, Dorset), although evidence for the modern survival of the Dorset surname has not been found. Both place-names derive from the Old English personal name Bubba plus Old English cnoll ‘hillock’.

The name may sometimes have been confused with Bicknell.
