From Bodiam (Sussex) recorded as Bodeham (1086 and 12th century) Bodiham (12th to 14th centuries) Budeham (1319) and Bodgiham (1610 in Speed's map).

The original sense was ‘Boda's homestead or manor’ (Old English Boda + hām).

The 1610 form in which -di- has developed to -dgi- is reflected in the principal surviving form of the surname Budgen and in the modern pronunciation of the place-name as [bɔʤəm].
