From Llanyblodwel (Shrops) which is recorded as Blodwelle in about 1200, Blodewell in 1272, and Llanblodwell in 1535. The place-name probably derives from Old English blōd ‘blood’ + wella ‘spring, stream’.

The later affix is Welsh llan ‘church’.
