Bickelhaupt Family History

Bickelhaupt Surname Meaning

South German: probably from Middle High German becken- or beckelhūbe ‘bowl-shaped helmet’ applied as a nickname for someone who wore one.

It was later reinterpreted through folk etymology as Bickel ‘pickaxe’ + Haupt ‘head’.

This reinterpretation leads to the meaning of ‘thick head’ or ‘pointed head’.
