East Frisian and North German: from a pet form of the ancient Germanic personal name Baldo, a short form of various compound names with the first element bald ‘bold’. This surname is very rare in East Frisia.

German: nickname from Middle High German backe ‘cheek, buttock’ or a variant of Bache.
