Most probably a variant of Hayes which is common both as a surname and as a minor place-name in Devon where the original sense ‘enclosure’ (Old English gehæg Middle English hay) had probably developed to ‘farm’ or ‘holding’ (Place-Names of Devon p. 129) by the Middle English period.

Possibly also a variant of Ace.
