Averley Family History

A variant of Haverley (see Habberley) shows a loss of the initial H-. This is explicit in records such as Mary Averley or Aberley from 1625 and Edward Aberley from 1708 in IGI, Rugeley, Staffs. Additional examples include Edwd Habberley from 1702, Edward Haverley from 1708, Charles Aberly from 1732, and Eleanor Joyce Averley from 1815, all documented in IGI, Saint Giles Cripplegate, London.

The place-name may derive from Aversley Wood in Sawtrey (Hunts, now Cambs), featuring a loss of the medial -s-. Historical records denote the name as Ailbrittesle in 1209, Aylbritesle in 1245, and Albrichelee in 1290, which derives from the Old English personal name Æðelbeorht (genitive Æðelbeorhtes) combined with lēah, meaning 'open woodland'.

A(i)lbrit(s)ley likely underwent simplification to forms resembling Aber(s)ley or Aver(s)ley, although the timing of this change remains uncertain. If John de Averle, recorded in 1279 in Hundred Rolls (Hunts), demonstrates reliable spelling, it could serve as early evidence for the surname, possibly explaining its presence in 17th-century Cambs. However, the lack of any medieval spellings of the place-name featuring Aber- or Aver- complicates matters when evaluating this plausibility.

Another possibility suggests it could be a variant of Aveley, with -er- emerging as an inverted spelling of the medial unstressed -e-. Comparisons can be made with individuals like Martha Averley from 1787, Martha Aveley from 1788, and William Aveley from 1833, all documented in IGI (Soham, Cambs). However, it is noted that spellings featuring -er- appeared much earlier for the Soham family name, suggesting that Aveley likely emerged as a late spelling of Averley.
