Armishaw Family History

Armishaw Surname Meaning

Origin uncertain; perhaps from a lost place called Ametesawe near Leek (Staffs) which is recorded thus in 1275. The place-name derives from Middle English shawe ‘copse grove’ (Old English sceaga ‘small wood’) with an uncertain first element possibly Middle English ermite ‘hermit’.

Alternatively, perhaps from a lost place in Cheshire see Ormesher.
