Ansel Surname Meaning
German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): from a vernacular form of the personal name Anselmus; see Anselm. Jews borrowed the personal name Ansel from German Christians in the Middle Ages and commonly used it as a vernacular equivalent of the Biblical name Asher.
In some cases also an Americanized form of Slovenian Anzelj Anžel or Anželj: from old vernacular pet forms of the personal name Janez (see John).
