Looking for information on families who stayed: Jacob and Christina (Guenthner) Kilber and their children Wilhelmina, Elisabetha, Heinrich, Dorothea, Rosina, Magdalena, Christina, Reinholdt, Alexander, Johannes. Marriages were to Haar, Eduard Dubs, Heinrich Murchel (I found him and wife Wilhelmina and some of their descendants), Heinrich Ellwein (d. around 1914). Other marriages unknown. Probably lived in various daughter colonies of Zuerichtal.

There were many, many more villages formed by Evangelicals over the 100 years of their living there. As the families grew, the married children were sent off to form new villages, often adjoining or on the ruins of Tatar villages. By the time of the deportations and murders, there were hundreds of villages.

"Zuerichtal was the only colony on the Crimean peninsula, and one of only two villages in the entire Tsarist Empire, that was founded by Swiss immigrants."

Sandra, I don't doubt your info. You should notify the site that their info is incorrect and provide them w/your correction and sources you have.

It is correct in that it was the only SWISS colony, but there were hundreds of EVANGELICAL colonies. The Swiss, many of whom had roots or relatives from southern Germany, inter-married with the other German colonists. For example, my maternal grandmother's family came to Zuerichtal from Switzerland, but had roots in Wuerttemberg prior to that. She married a Guenthner, just as some of her ancestors before her had done. the Guenthner family was from Wuerttemberg. Both families settled in Crimea, though the Guenthners were in the German Evangelical (Lutheran) villages.
