German: habitational name for someone from Stege or Steeg. English (Gloucestershire): variant of Stigger (see Sticker ) with Middle English lowering and lengthening of the vowel. Slovenian Czech and Slovak (Šteger): topographic name of German origin (see 1 above). In North America this surname may also be an altered form of the Czech variant Štegr and of Slovenian Štegar.
