Osmond Family History
Osmond Name Meaning
English (Somerset and Devon): from the Middle English personal name Osmund representing either Old English Ōsmund or Anglo-Scandinavian Ōsmund from Old Norse Ásmundr Asmund from elements meaning ‘god’ + ‘protection' (English); ‘hand; bride-price’ (Scandinavian). The name was popular among Normans in Normandy (see 2 below) and this contributed substantially to its currency in post-Conquest England. By the middle of the 13th century it was an inherited surname of the Norman family that owned Melbury Osmond in Dorset. For a probable pet form of Osmund see Hoskin . French (mainly Normandy): from the Old Norse personal name Asmund (see 1 above).
